our story
From garden shed to global impact
It all began with a few ideas and a healthy dose of curiosity combined with a passion to succeed in a garden shed. After many long thoughts, trial and error testing, and prototype tweaks, the first Leading Edge wind turbine came to life. Before long this humble beginning turned into something far greater and in 2009 the LE-300 was released to the world, gaining momentum primarily in the yachting world.
Just a year later, our first vertical axis turbine, the LE-v50, launched, and by 2011 our vertical turbines were spinning in some of the harshest environments on Earth, including Antarctica. This paved the way for our durable reputation, showing our products could really make a difference especially as they excelled in the most extreme places.
Over the following years, our product range gradually expanded: the LE-600, the LE-v150, and then our Extreme versions, built stronger, tougher, and ready for more continued excellence in challenging environments.

However, it wasn’t just about turbines anymore. By 2016, it was clear that demand was really for complete off-grid power solutions. Recognising this, we made a shift - designing plug-and-go systems that were smart, integrated, and tailored for real-world needs. We embraced IoT technology, smarter power management, and bespoke system design, unlocking new possibilities across sectors such as telecoms, security, and infrastructure.

Throughout these years, all our production took place on a rural farmyard in Herefordshire. Situated on a small hill, Skyrrid Farm was an ideal test site for wind turbines, though not without its quirks. Our 'office' was a draughty portakabin warmed by a wood-burning stove, and the team was just five strong. Deliveries arrived via lorries that braved our narrow lane, and without a forklift, unloading was very much a team effort... as well as a free gym workout! As demand grew and so did our sales, we converted an old barn into a workshop, allowing us to scale up and take on bigger projects.

Then came COVID, and like everyone else, we adapted. Thankful for excellent suppliers all within a close radius, we persevered and continued to grow. The autumn of 2021 brought our biggest challenge yet with the devastating loss of our MD Dave Hailes. He had helped shape the company from day one and was the core of the manufacturing process. Determined to continue on the solid foundations already established, LEP gradually rebuilt. Testing resilience in more ways than imaginable, the newly expanded team of 12 diverse individuals thrived in the face of adversity, overcoming all possible challenges resulting in immense growth. We upgraded from the beloved portakabin to a temporary office (an old Airbnb) in 2023, and along the way even bought fish for our pond. Still, we kept growing and in June 2024 the time came to move again, improving our accessibility and professional stance in the industry.
Today, we’re proud to be based in a purpose-built facility on a local industrial estate, a space that finally fits who we’ve become: an off-grid power company rooted in practical experience, technical expertise, and a relentless strive.
We now design, build, and support systems that power everything from scientific research to critical communications with capacity to share our knowledge by hosting and training future generations. We pride ourselves in succeeding where others may fail and design and manufacture tailored solutions, replacing fossil-fuel generators with clean, renewable energy.

Through it all, one thing has never changed: the dedication and heart of our team. From a shed-built turbine to powering the most remote places on Earth, this is our journey. Thank you for joining us - we're only just getting started!
